Tim Tebow and All Disgusting Showboating of FaithPosted: January 14, 2012
The DailyDisgust has its own faith, one that does not align with the mythology of mainstream religions, but indeed has a moral code and structure. That said, it also respects the faith and moral codes of others–far be it for me to tell someone theirs is a false faith. However I will gladly call out those who seek to use their faith to some end other than their own strength or salvation. My father (literal, not spiritually figurative) put it best in a bumper sticker idea several years back: “It’s time to put Christ back into Christianity”.
There are myriad examples of those who have committed grave atrocities despite of or in the name of their faith. (See Crusades, the or Dubya, George.) But today I’ll focus on one who doesn’t outright cause harm to others.
Enter Tim Tebow, the notoriously poor passing and frequently kneeling QB of the Denver Broncos. All evidence points to Tebow’s faith being genuine and practiced consistently through all aspects of his life–heck, what other 24 year-old would publicly own his own virginity? I respect that, and suspect that Tebow will not turn out to be the second coming of Tiger with a back-story of sleaze behind his public good boy image. But dammit, Tim, quit with the dropping to one knee bit already! The world knows that you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, so you can go ahead and stop the self-aggrandizing prayer bit now.
While I do have a pretty decent understanding of the Christian holy text, I’ll cop to finding this bit of scripture via the comments on a Tim Tebow article on Gawker:
Matthew Chapter 6:
5 “When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.
6But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
And finally, I have to pass on this fine song remake which I found via Ms. DailyDisgust
