No surprise here: Mediacom rated worst cable provider in nation

I used to have Mediacom.  Man it sucked.  Significant periods of no connection, poor quality equipment, ridiculous prices, and on and on and on.  Now Consumer Reports has confirmed my anecdotal experience with their annual survey of cable providers.

Consumer Reports survey: Mediacom is the worst from the Press Citizen, May 7, 2012

Mediacom, the dominant cable company in the state of Iowa, ranked at the bottom of a survey of 50,000 consumer reports readers for TV service, phone service and bundled telecom services. In Internet service, the company ranked only above satellite Internet providers WildBlue and HughesNet.

A common theme for Mediacom among respondents was in the “Value” category for all four services surveyed. Mediacom had the worst rating for value on all four.

The one thing that I can say for Mediacom is that the women who used to work in the Gilbert St. office in Iowa City were always incredibly helpful and friendly.

  1. They totally suck. They also raise their rates constantly. Looking forward to saying good riddance to them.

I believe it and we don’t even have cable. And never will for the reasons you summarized. Thank the Telecommunications Act of 1996 for ensconcing such companies into comfortable little monopolies.

Ever notice when you call w/a problem and audimated tele operator gives you the same shit of “for example you want to make a payment?” payment payment not what is your cable problem? The only things those bastards don’t screw up is that fn money! (I miss free tv)

In our area of N.C., Mediacom is the only option for cable. Their service is terrible. Our internet constantly cuts off, as does our cable, though less frequently. The actual office is a couple of counties away, so technicians for the area are subcontracted. Whenever we call to report a problem, they say a technician will come to check it out in about a week or two. Even then it’s not uncommon for them to not show up at all. Of all the times I’ve had to call, they’ve only actually shown up twice. Fortunately, it’s usually not a problem with our router, modem, etc.; it’s typically on their end and eventually gets resolved..until it happens again. In the summertime especially, our internet connectivity is slow, intermittent or non-existent. It made it particularly bad when I was taking classes online. Even when we’re without service for a couple of days (or more) at a time, they’ve only ever deducted money from the bill once. For all I know, this may be the standard of all companies, as I have nothing to compare it to, I just don’t like paying for services that I’m not receiving. The only real consistency I’ve seen with this company is that their bills always arrive on time and how quickly they cut their service off if they aren’t paid.

I hear you. Recently a local excavator was working on a project for a new subdivision here in West Branch. He called a meeting with all potentially affected utilities. Guess which one didn’t show? After 48 hours he would have been within his rights to go ahead and cut through their cable–probably the only thing that would’ve gotten their attention! He was responsible and respectable unfortunately and did no such thing.
